A fifteen-page special report on smart cities was published in The Times on 15 March 2017.
It contains articles on a wide range of topics related to smart cities, including London’s digital connectivity, cyber security, data privacy, and using digital technologies to help tackle smog.
The overview article, entitled ‘What being smart means for cities’, draws attention to some of the learning that has resulted from the first wave of smart city initiatives. Experts and commentators highlight the importance of properly embedding initiatives within the unique social and policy context of particular cities.
The piece features quotes from Simon Joss of the International Eco Cities Initiative. According to Joss, “This is perhaps the most challenging aspect of the smart city: how to harness digital technology and big data to benefit and enfranchise those at the margins of the economy and society… Innovators should seek to redress, rather than further entrench, the urban divide.”
